About Internet Computer
Internet Computer was launched in 2021 by the DFINITY Foundation, led by Dominic Williams. It is designed to extend the internet by enabling smart contracts (called canisters) to serve web content directly, without needing traditional cloud hosting or CDNs.
Unlike most blockchains, the Internet Computer can serve user-facing web applications at web speed with unlimited capacity. Canisters on ICP can store data, process computations, and serve HTTP requests, making it possible to build social media, DeFi, and enterprise applications entirely on-chain. ICP tokens are used for governance (through the Network Nervous System), computation cycles, and node provider rewards.
