About Filecoin
Filecoin was launched in 2020 by Protocol Labs, founded by Juan Benet, as a decentralized alternative to centralized cloud storage providers like AWS and Google Cloud. Storage providers earn FIL by offering disk space, and clients pay FIL to store and retrieve data on the network.
Filecoin uses proof-of-replication and proof-of-spacetime to verify that storage providers are actually storing the data they claim to store. The network has grown to store exabytes of data and supports computation over stored data through its FVM (Filecoin Virtual Machine), enabling smart contracts that can interact with stored data. FIL is used for storage payments, mining collateral, and governance.
